In 2010 I reviewed a book called “Infectious Disease Management in Animal Shelters,” which I loved and highly recommended to anyone working in any facility that houses animals. Many of the contributors to this infection control manual also contributed to that book, and there is significant overlap of material, but I strongly recommend this book even to those who already own the other.

This is a manual, not a textbook, and as such is geared entirely toward the use and application of the material within. It is a large format book, spiral bound, and contains many tables, lists, sample protocols, and highlighted key points, which make it easy to navigate. Going through the chapters, I found many examples of information I would love to see posted in a kennel, isolation ward, clinic, or materials storage and processing room.

There are only five chapters: Introduction to Infection Control for Animal Shelters, Principles of Infection Control for Animal Shelters, Disinfection 101, Developing Infectious Disease Policies and Protocols in an Animal Shelter, and Infection Control Training and Educational Tools. Each chapter is focused on the infectious disease control challenges of animal shelters, and as such provides a thorough reference for addressing issues from the front door to the back (as well as outdoor areas). However, the general concepts can be applied to any facility that houses animals—owned or unowned, vaccinated or not, carrier or potential new host.

The last chapter of this book is a collection of handouts and posters that can be used as training tools or educational materials for shelter staff, volunteers, and animal adopters. This information is also provided on the CD-ROM that accompanies the manual. In addition, updated fact sheets are made available online at the Center for Food Security and Public Health, Iowa State University website. The primary editor, Dr. Christy Peterson, even provides her phone number and email address for reader comments and suggestions. Personally, I am deeply appreciative of this level of commitment to both the subject matter and to animal shelters and staff.

For those who are looking for an infection control manual for veterinary hospitals, as far as I am aware, that book does not exist. There is a good article available on the Worms and Germs online blog called “Infection Prevention and Control Best Practices,” sponsored by the Canadian Committee on Antibiotic Resistance. I would recommend using Maddie’s® Infection Control Manual and this article to create educational and training materials for private veterinary practice.

This book should get extensive use in both shelter and non-shelter animal care facilities. I plan to keep my copy within arm’s reach and to use it in veterinary assistant training. I give it five stars and two paws up.
