The most recent sixth edition of this classic radiology textbook has been updated to include chapters on MR spinal imaging, information on the diagnosis of spinal cord disease through the use of CT and MRI and updated information on digital imaging. The chapters on basic interpretation of radiographs have been completely rewritten and updated as well. Revised and updated chapters on radiation protection and the physics of diagnostic radiology have also been added.

The first section of the text contains updated information on Radiation Protection and Physics of Diagnostic Radiology, Digital Radiographic Imaging, Physics of Ultrasound Imaging, Principles of Computed Tomography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Introduction to Radiographic Interpretation.

Subsequent sections are divided into the Axial Skeleton, the Appendicular Skeleton, the Thoracic Cavity and the Abdominal Cavity for dogs, cats and horses. Each section includes chapters on basic radiographic anatomy, radiographic interpretation and disease or abnormal conditions for each corresponding body part or system. Proper positioning and, where applicable preparation protocols are discussed in depth.

The text is accompanied by numerous photos of high quality radiographs depicting both normal and abnormal findings. The radiographs are clearly noted with arrows and in depth explanations of what the reader is looking at and what to look for in the clinicians own radiographic evaluations.

The text is complete in encompassing all areas of diagnostic imaging including special radiographic techniques such as portography for helping to diagnose liver shunts, as well as discussions on the benefits versus downfalls of said procedures.

This is a useful text for any clinician to have in their library, both as a review of basic radiographic principles and as a handy, well organized diagnostic aid. Although there is discussion of positioning artifacts and basic technique settings, this is not a “how to” or guide for technicians in the actual radiographic process. The many expert contributors who have written the various chapters, as well the numerous references at the end of each chapter make this text a wealth of information.
