This is a text for technicians for study beyond basic tech training. The technician with ambitions to encompass the scope of general veterinary care might find a useful path to focus on a specific specialty field.

The book is arranged by body systems, so there is some small duplication. The topics may not cover all aspects of internal medicine as the book is focused on those areas most commonly found in the clinical arena.

The opening chapter—Physical Examination, places a great deal of the initial interview and examination on the technician, as well as the responsibility of the technician for accuracy in notating and relating the information for the veterinarian.

The anatomy of disease and discussion of disease processes is detailed and informative. There are photos of radiographs illustrating specific points, and explanatory points of various diseases and the part they play in the overall condition of the animal. I did find one photo which I believe is in error (fig 6.5.4) in which the film is described as showing right-sided pneumothorax and partial lung-collapse when the film is clearly marked "left".

This would be an excellent textbook for technician training as it will familiarize the tech with how diseases work and how they affect the animal. Understanding how a thing works goes a long way in assisting with the care of the patient. This book will enable the technician who goes for one of the specialty degrees being offered for techs, to take over many tasks currently restricted to licensed veterinarians.

With the development of technician organizations and with specialty degrees being offered through technician groups, this sort of advanced education will be needed. This book is clearly intended to prepare the technician for a specialty degree, and while probably most useful for the veterinary student, it will be useful for technician studies.

The book is excellent and detailed. Many aspects of veterinary medicine and procedures are explained. Each chapter takes the reader from the origins of a problem, to diagnosis, treatment, and follow up.

Overall, the book is well illustrated and informative. The technician who reads this book from front to back will gain valuable knowledge. There are 14 chapters, but I suggest going on-line and having a look at the complete Table of Contents to appreciate the full scope of this book.
