This text provides a much needed resource for laboratory technicians. It provides details for the detection of many human parasitic pathogens, a zoonotic concern to be sure.
The first chapter discusses the means of detection, interpretation, standardization, quality control and assurance. The remaining text is divided into sections including Sarcomastigophora, Ciliophora and Apicomplex, Platyhelminthes: Cestoda, Platyhelminthes: Trematoda, Nematoda, Arthropoda: Arachnida, Arthropoda: Insecta, and Arthropoda: Pentastomida.
Each section discusses the significant parasites that are included in that phylum or class. The classification, morphology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, and clinical presentation of the parasites are included. The meat of each chapter is then delved into with a discussion of conventional and molecular diagnosis. The sample collection and preparation is discussed in detail with easy to follow directions. The detection procedures are also discussed in detail with the step-by-step process included. Depending on the parasite involved this may include (to name a few) detection in a stool, intestinal, or muscle sample, PCR (including the gene sequence or primer), DNA extraction, isolation, sequencing, direct agglutination, bioassay, and karyotyping.
This is an excellent and necessary reference for any diagnostic laboratory. It will be utilized on a daily basis and will spend very little time gathering dust on the shelf. Veterinary technicians and veterinarians interested in zoonotic potential of parasites will find this to be a valuable resource.
