Legal Consents for Veterinary Practices is just that, a 201 page book of consent forms covering quite possibly every circumstance that may present to a veterinary clinic. Written by an author who is himself a veterinarian as well as an attorney, the book provides forms and legal templates in both English and Spanish.
Beginning with a concise explanation of the law as it applies to veterinary medicine, Dr Wilson has divided the forms in such a way as to make it easy to locate exactly the right form for every occasion. The forms are divided into seven sections as follows:
- Consent Form for Recommended Treatment and Care
- Consent Forms for Special Purposes or Situations
- Consent Forms for Vaccinations and Serological Testing
- Consent Forms for Use of Veterinary Drugs
- Consent Forms for Difficult Situations
- Consent Forms for Clinical Trials and Use of Pets for Educational Programs
- Other Consent Forms, Policies and Statements
Forms are printed so that they can be photocopied; however, that is not necessary as there is a CD-ROM containing all forms previewed in the book. The forms included can be personalized through filling in the appropriate blanks and signatures. It should be noted that the purchase of this book carries with it copyright license to reprint hard copies for up to five veterinary practices under the practitioners ownership. This fourth edition includes many new features – forms that may be used for such topics as laboratory testing, educational consent, credit management as well as alternative medical treatment such as acupuncture and pet-related blood donation.
This is a book that will be useful to any veterinary technician or clinician in practice as well as being useful to the veterinary technician or veterinary educator teaching ethics or classes dealing with legal professionalism (although educators need to adhere to copyright limitations in terms of making copies for their classes as handouts, the good news is it is all covered within the book to keep everyone honest). The employee who introduces this book to his/her employer will be an instant superstar as the forms take all the guesswork out of covering ones practice of veterinary medicine. The reviewer gives this a solid 5 star rating.
