The book: Job Descriptions and Training Schedules for the Veterinary Team, while not a bona fide textbook, does have the capability of being just that – a text to utilize in classes training the well-rounded office and clinical veterinary staff. Broken down into twelve chapters, each chapter addresses a different job description as well as how to develop training schedules for new hires as well as modification for current staff. Among the staff that are covered includes:

  • Receptionist
  • Veterinary Assistant
  • Veterinary Technician
  • Kennel Assistant
  • Kennel Manager
  • Office Manager
  • Practice Manager/Hospital Administrator

Admittedly, every clinic may not have all of these different personnel; however, any veterinary technician has the capability of fulfilling/filling any of them or may be found supervising these positions. Because it is not out of the realm of possibility that a veterinary technician may be promoted to office or practice manager, a good reference on where to start is essential.

The veterinary educator will enjoy this book as a way to add organization to the various tasks assigned to the different staff members. The authors have broken tasks down by area as well as give time periods for consideration of training of new personnel allowing the reader good planning and time management skills essential in management. Veterinarians may also enjoy this quick go to reference if they are themselves the managing force behind their clinic.

The book is 155 pages and complimented by a CD that contains the entire content of the text. This allows the user to create their own custom made job description and training schedules to fit their individual situations. The book jacket states this “book is an investment in your future and for your veterinary business;” as true of a statement as ever made. For that reason, a 5 star rating is appropriate.
