The Encyclopedia of Feline Clinical Nutrition is published by Royal Canin (2008) and is a remarkable text covering most comprehensibly the nutrition of cats. The book is the work of 23 international contributing authors as well as 24 additional professionals from around the world who are charged as “enabling the production” of this encyclopedia (one of which is VIN’s very own Dr. Paul Pion).

Broken down into fourteen chapters, the encyclopedia covers the following topics as they pertain to felines:

  • Feline Obesity
  • Nutritional Dematoses
  • Digestive Diseases
  • Nutritional Management of Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Disease
  • Feline Diabetes mellitis (nutritional strategies)
  • Diagnostic Approach to Hyperlipidemic Cats
  • Dietary Therapy for Feline Chronic Kidney Disease
  • Nutritional Management of Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disorders
  • Acquired C-V Disease in Cats
  • Nutrition & Oral Health
  • Nutritional Status of Cats with Cancer
  • Nutritional and Critical Care in Cats
  • Feeding Behavior in Cats
  • Nutrition and Immunity

The book is 518 pages of nutritional education at its finest. The chapters are color coded and the text is well endowed with beautiful pictures, charts, tables and epidemiological and statistical data which support the scientific writings of the experts. In addition to photographic documentation of such feline health issues as jaundice, obesity and oral issues; the text has a remarkable collection of endoscopic, colonoscopic and radiographic images which depicts much of the damage done by improper nutrition which is not as easily visualized or detected.

Each chapter covers the topics biologically, chemically and biochemically, and ends with “Frequently Asked Questions” on the topic as well as extensive reference lists that cover up to three pages per chapter and provide many more references for the person looking for more information on a given topic. This book is a dream for a veterinary technician student writing a paper or researching feline nutrition. For the technician who is studying nutrition in order to test for a specialty this book is pure gold.

Clinically speaking, this book would be useful to clinicians, technicians and educators who are interested in the practice of feline nutrition as it applies to feline health maintenance. For this reason, this book is a 5 star find and should be on the shelf of anyone who practices or has interest in feline nutrition.
