More than a handbook, this is a start-to-finish course in neurologic disorders with quick access to vital information in a wide range of species. Substantial changes and updates have been included in this edition. There are more color illustrations and additional information to identify lesions by anatomical location, and expanded references for each chapter.

The authors bring your attention to the Appendix, which lists breed-associated, breed-specific, or inherited neuromuscular diseases in domestic animals. New diseases have likewise been included.

The book has disorders arranged by problem rather than by established disease diagnosis, better relating to how an animal is presented and simplifies achieving a correct diagnosis.

An accompanying website contains 20 video case studies correlating to case studies in the book.

Tables, individual cases, and pertinent information boxes are sorted by background color.

Part I (four chapters) covers history, neuroanatomy, and neurologic examination.

The chapter on neurologic history and exams is detailed and interesting. A chart of cranial nerves is included in the section on anatomical and functional organization. Another chart illustrates the nerves relating to specific areas, showing dots to indicate correct locations for testing sensation in front and hind limbs. Various positional diagnostic clues are illustrated as well, using drawings. Percussion spots are shown and the use of noxious odors and facial reflex techniques add to the diagnostics.

The author next lists the principles of lesion localization using anatomic information from chapter 1. Several case reports are included, showing the species/breed. An assessment of the case is included, summarizing the case and offering a prognosis.

There are numerous charts illustrating a large variety of problems, diagnostic tools— some diagnostics are illustrated with photos. The sections walk the reader thorough identification of problems and testing as well as confirming a diagnosis.

Part II (15 chapters) covers clinical problems, signs and symptoms. This section discusses essentially every part of anatomy that might be affected by a neurological problem. The table of contents is arranged for easy reference. If a clinician has a case on the exam table, this book should help identify and confirm most any diagnosis.

As with some other books, it would be an excellent idea for the veterinarian to peruse this book during a break in the daily routine, and become familiar with the contents for later reference.
