One of many things that we as veterinary professionals need, but are not taught is management, especially team management within a clinic. Dr. Smith provides a well-organized text that introduces the concepts of team management while providing plenty of exercises to practice what is being discussed. This book covers how veterinary practices are unique when compared to other organizations, different management strategies and how to go about setting up your team and leaders. Additional resources are provided in each chapter allowing you to gain more in-depth knowledge or understanding if desired. Though management is not my forte and I never planned on being in a position to manage other people, this book makes the prospect less scary and provides a great frame-work to develop yourself and your team.
This book would be an excellent source for a first time manager, be they a veterinarian or technician. For a student interested in going into management this would be a good first source of additional information. If you are teaching a management class this book provides many activities that would be useful in a classroom setting, or easily assigned as homework.
