The author of this book, Dr. Holt has definitely put a lot of work in showing every possible complication that can happen to the urogenital system. As a result of his many years of surgical experience, he is able to show very detailed pictures and x-rays. The book covers every type of emergency situation involving the urinary system, urinary blockages, trauma, congenital abnormalities, and urogenital cancers.
Dr. Holt is currently a Professor of Veterinary Surgery at the University of Bristol. For the past 20 years he has been a teacher and a researcher with a keen interest in Urology. Dr. Holt mentions in the forward that this book is aimed as a “Practical guide for the general practitioner.” I would agree that Part 1 in the book is very good at showing how to perform IVU studies, urinary catheterization, and specimen collection, but all of Part 2 is strictly geared toward the surgeon and/or the surgical resident.
For the general practitioner the book goes into great detail about how to perform a cystotomy and how to catheterize for every type of urogenital emergency one can imagine. For the surgeon and soon-to-be surgeon this book has very detailed pictures and explanations in great detail for example: correcting perineal ruptures, prostatectomy, correcting ectopic ureters, etc. I would definitely recommend this book for the referral veterinarian. Its step-by-step guide on urogenital complications would be an asset to any veterinarian. However, for the veterinary technician this book will be of limited or no value except in the case of researching procedures as a student technician writing a paper on such topics as is covered.
