This first edition of Small Animal Neurological Emergencies (Platt, Garosi) provides a new helpful reference for those in critical and emergency care treating neurological cases as well as a very useful detailed reference for those in neurology specialty practice covering a wide gambit of neurological diseases.

The book is divided into four parts: admission and neurodiagnostic tests, decision making, specific emergencies, and specific management issues. MRI, CT, and radiographic images are included to apply diagnostic results to different conditions. The authors employ quick reference tables that allow better understanding of differentials used for diagnosis, various treatments and dosages, diagnostic findings in adherence with presentation, and much more. There are also helpful algorithms to assist in guiding the practitioner and aiding the veterinary technician in understanding the diagnosis of a neurological patient. Other scenarios such as management of the head trauma patient are included. The tables and algorithms are indispensable when all hands are on board and seconds make a difference.

In the appendices, an emergency drug use guide is included for specific drugs employed in treating the neurological patient. Thumbing through Plumb’s Drug Formulary is not an option in an emergency, having these select drugs listed along with their mechanisms, dosages, adverse effects, and precautions is an invaluable asset to this text. Also included in the appendices are biochemical parameters, arterial blood gas and coagulation test ranges, as well as a blood transfusion monitoring sheet.

This book is not only an incredibly functional, easy to use reference for the neurological and critical care practitioner, but also for veterinary technicians and support staff. For those practitioners and technicians already specialized in neurology, as well as those in the process of specializing, this book is a must-have for your library.
