Wiley-Blackwell has done it again with another five-minute veterinary consult clinical companion textbook. The recent edition encompasses both feline and canine infectious diseases as well as parasitology ranging from the common parvovirus to the obscure Amebiasis. Each organism documented is presented through information which includes definitions, etiology, signalment/history, clinical features, differential diagnosis, diagnostics, therapeutics, and miscellaneous comments. Additional bonuses such as dosage charts, detailed photographs, and suggested readings will further intrigues the reader on the topics covered.
The textbook setup fulfills the author’s purpose as a quick reference book with bullet points on each pathogen that enables any member of the veterinary team to learn valuable facts about the diseases. The information provided is prepared in a concise and organized fashion with avenues for further education. One major drawback in this edition that I would like to see corrected in future editions involves infection control. Many of the pathogens have specific details on the characteristics of the disease; however, some fail to recognize the prevention and control concerns veterinary personnel must include when treating these pathogens (i.e. zoonoses). For example, consider the following: proper disinfection protocols, handling considerations, periods of shedding, etc. Regardless, this book can be a vital tool utilized in any small animal veterinary clinic by technicians and clinicians alike on a daily basis. It would also be very helpful to those studying parasitology as well as veterinary diseases. Overall I gave this book a 4 out of 5 rating.
