This latest offering from Hendrix and Robinson is a nicely done text of 392 glossy pages. Initially, the authors’ present a comprehensive chapter on parasites (Trematodes, Nematodes, Cestodes and Protozoa) that affect domestic animals. The remaining chapters are divided into chapters dedicated to the various phyla of parasites that those working within veterinary health are familiar with. These include thirteen chapters devoted to the phyla of the following: Platyhelminthes (Cestoda, Trematoda), Acanthocephala (Thorny-Headed Worm), Protozoa (Flagellates, Amoeba, and Ciliates) and Arthropods (Crustacea, Myriopoda, Leeches and Insecta). Other chapters address parasites of public health importance, common laboratory procedures, references and appendices. Within the various chapters is one of the most comprehensive coverage of animals’ species which the reviewer has seen. The authors have covered aquatics, equine, bovine, caprine, ovine, porcine, avian, lab animal species and reptiles to name a few.
As a veterinary technician educator, I was particularly interested in the chapter on common laboratory procedures. All of the common lab tests are covered as well as step-by-step instructions for making the various floatation solutions commonly utilized. Throughout the chapter are “Technician Notes” which provide a variety of hints for technicians as well as photographs that are remarkable and of stellar quality to aid students in the identification of ova, larvae and adult parasites of all types. Additionally as an Elsevier title, the book has an accompanying webpage within the Elsevier EVOLVE website. I recently discovered both the student site and the instructors’ site and they are truly wonderful. Not only are they great resources for teachers, they are great study guides for students. The review question and answer section at the end of each chapter is helpful as well for review of the chapter content. This book is a solid five stars out of five and would be helpful for veterinary technician students, practicing technicians as well as educators. Although veterinarians may not find this book as exciting as Georgi’s, they may want to consider having a copy bench side for their technicians to make use of.
