The Pocket Wadsworth Handbook was designed with the college student in mind and covers in detail how to write a paper. Though this is a “pocket edition,” the authors cover every aspect of the writing process from determining the style of writing to use, topic selection, construction of the paper, grammar and punctuation, choosing resources and documentation styles. Beyond that initial broad collection of information, the authors go on provide a section called “Developing Strategies for Academic Success” where they provide advice on studying, reading critically, designing effective documents (including digital documents), writing letters of application, résumé’s, memos and emails for the workplace, making oral presentations and writing for specific disciplines. A final section of the book is specifically for students for whom English is a second language or who are bilingual in order to help them understand what is expected of students by instructors in America when it comes to writing assignments and provides tips to help them meet those expectations. All of this information is provided in an easy-to-read, in-depth format while maintaining a small, easy to carry book that won’t add another 3 lbs to a student’s already overloaded backpack.
This book is a wonderful resource for students who are moving into a higher education setting where writing is often stressed more highly than in high school. Beyond it’s usefulness in school, it will continue to serve students who are transitioning into the workforce and need to appear well educated and professional when hunting for a job and in representing themselves and their employers in professional settings once hired. Another area where this book will serve as a great resource is for those people who have been out of an educational setting for some time and discover a need to produce quality written materials for professional publications or presentations. While it could have been could have been laid out in a design that makes it easier to find different sections, the book as a whole is a wonderful resource that provides a large amount of useful information for people looking to construct well written materials. Technicians both in school as well as those interested in writing throughout their career will enjoy this book as a refresher course.
