Cattle Medicine by Scott, Penny, and Macrae is an excellent overview of important bovine diseases that may be encountered by large animal veterinary practitioners. The text is intended as a concise, practical text rather than a detailed treatise on bovine medicine. The book is divided into 18 chapters, covering all systems of the body. The chapters on the various systems of the body begin with a brief overview of the particular system. For each disease, there is a description of the etiology of the disease, clinical presentation, diagnosis and management. 634 excellent quality full color photographs serve to effectively illustrate the information presented in the chapters.
The reproductive system, obstetrics and parturient diseases are covered within the first two chapters. The digestive tract and abdomen is discussed in chapter three. The next few chapters cover the respiratory, cardiovascular, nervous system, musculoskeletal and urinary tract diseases. Chapter nine is devoted to skin diseases, followed by a chapter discussing ocular diseases. Other chapters are devoted to mastitis and teat diseases, parasitic diseases, and clostridia-related diseases. Chapter fourteen covers metabolic diseases followed by the next two chapters covering trace element and vitamin deficiencies, miscellaneous infectious and exotic diseases. Chapter 17 discusses toxins and the final chapter rounds out the book by examining bovine anesthesia. Resources include a list of abbreviations common to the practice of bovine medicine at the beginning of the book and a list of references for further reading at the end of the book.
As an overview, this is an excellent, well-organized text that offers easily accessed up to date information. Practitioners and others using this book as a reference may need additional texts for more detailed information. However, it should be noted that this is exactly the intention of the authors. Clinicians, veterinary students as well as veterinary technician students and graduates interested in the practice of bovine medicine will find this a useful book to have in their reference library.
