This is the fourth edition of this well-respected text. It has been updated to include several newly discovered diseases including canine respiratory coronavirus and canine pnuemovirus. A new chapter has been added that discusses the management of disease in feral cat populations.

As in the past, this text provides the reader with in-depth information on infectious diseases seen in dogs and cats. The text includes not only viral diseases but also bacterial, fungal, algal, protozoal, mycoplasmal, rickettsial, and chlamydial. The inclusion of these topics makes this text a stand-alone reference for infectious diseases.

The text is user friendly in that the chapters are consistent with their layout and the order in which information is presented. The table of contents is easy to use and breaks each chapter down into sections. Unlike some texts, the index is also complete and makes finding a specific subject simple.

While the text includes in-depth material, it is easy to read and understand. It stands up to the editor's claim to maximize information while preserving readability and usefulness. The only appendix included in the text is an antimicrobial drug formulary. There is a companion website which contains the majority of the tables, images, appendices, and references as well as links to articles or studies listed in the references. The website is extensive and an excellent resource for additional information.

As with past editions, this text provides a necessary resource for small animal practitioners. Infectious diseases are constantly changing and adapting to become more virulent. This text is an exceptional source for information on the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases and may be appreciated by student and career veterinary technicians and interested practitioners.
