The latest pharmacology book to be written by Romich has incorporated many improvements since the first edition was published several years ago. Definitely to be viewed as a textbook befitting the education of veterinary technicians, it begins with an introductory tutelage on the accompanying CD software program aptly named “Study Ware.” Study Ware is a program which features quizzes and other interactive activities for students to practice and become competent in the performance of medical calculations. Because the scores for all quizzes can be printed off to reflect a students’ work, instructors may find this to be a remarkable tool for assignments in pharmacology class.
Each of the twenty-three chapters has sidebar “clinical ques” (clues) as well as a set of chapter review questions- numbering approximately twenty-to test the students’ grasp of the chapter subject matter with accompanying answers in the back for checking work. There is also additional review material included within the Study Ware CD and a convenient listing of associated Internet references from such heavy hitters in the veterinary industry as AVMA, FDA, and DEA.
The chapters are broken down according to the system of interest the pharmaceutical is intended to treat. Included are drugs affecting the: Nervous System, Gastrointestinal System, Cardiovascular System and Respiratory System, as well as chapters addressing pharmacokinetics, analgesics, fluid therapy, antiparasitics, vaccines and herbal therapies. There are also seventeen appendices addressing such topics as inventory management, unit conversions and management of animal toxicities. Appendix H covers conversion of body weight and is suitable for hanging up for quick reference in the pharmacy area of the clinic.
All in all, this is a comprehensive and well written book. The information is presented is engaging as well as educational and in some cases – downright “fun.” This reviewer can see potential for students, instructors, and those studying for state and national boards to utilize every page of this book. Sadly practitioners and practicing veterinary technicians may not have a need for this book as it is not a reference style manual. Potential for use of this text after graduation is the only reason for the 4-star rating.
