This is the third edition of this highly comprehensive equine reference text. The chapters have all been updated, revised and rewritten as needed. A large number of experts in the field of equine internal medicine have contributed to the text resulting in a wide range of relevant and useful information for the equine veterinarian.
The book is divided into two parts. The first part is entitled “Mechanisms of Disease and Principles of Treatment” giving detailed information on the immune system, infectious diseases, common problems that may be encountered by the equine veterinarian, pharmacological principles, clinical nutrition, pain management and critical care as well as a section on epidemiology. According to the authors, this section is designed to give the practitioner a detailed discussion on the basic mechanisms that may cause the problem to develop and the principles behind the treatment of the various conditions. Part 2 is entitled “Disorders of Specific Body Systems” and discusses specific disorders of the various systems of the body. A vast number of diseases for each body system are covered complete with important diagnostic and treatment information. Although there are not a large number of pictures in the book, there are some excellent black and white photographs throughout.
Equine Internal Medicine, Third Edition is an important text that equine practitioners will find a valuable edition to the clinic library. As the authors point out in the preface to the text, veterinary medicine has become very sophisticated with a large number of specialties. The authors’ hope is that for the field of equine internal medicine the text will have as much “universal appeal and application” as the editions that preceded it. Veterinary students will find this book highly useful as well. Veterinary technicians with a special interest in equine medicine might find this an interesting reference book although it is primarily designed as a veterinary text.
