If someone is going to work with Tilapia, this text could very well become the “go to” book. Extensively researched, it is a critical resource for aquaculture scientists, as well as for those interested in large scale tilapia production. There is little “fluff” in this book. A mere 277 pages manages to thoroughly cover virtually every aspect of the species. The twelve chapters cover everything from reproduction to harvest, history, health and disease, various production culturing methods, Tilapia's role in rural development, technological innovation and future potential. The book is packed with useful charts and data, and backed up by a forty-five pages of reference material.

The list of shortcomings of this book is very small, and somewhat nit-picky. First, I would have liked at least one page of colored pictures of the fish. Many books, especially those dealing with fish and birds have this same shortcoming. At my university, in our stock fish alone there is huge color variation. Also, I felt that checking local laws should have been emphasized more strongly. Laws regarding Tilapia production vary greatly from state to state. The author states quite clearly throughout the book that Tilapia are quite adaptable. In Chapter 12 the author includes most Environmental Impact Assessments are usually completed after a species is introduced, a feat which is virtually impossible to reverse.

The thoroughness of this text makes the advantages to Tilapia production clear, but a forceful reminder about variation in local law could curtail unfortunate circumstances for the producer and/or the environment. Other than these two small points, this single source of in-depth information is worth the price for anyone that will be working extensively with Tilapia and is already abreast of the local laws.

For veterinarians and veterinary technicians working with Tilapia producers in the region, or for those working with wildlife where Tilapia's have become part of the local population, this book is a valuable resource. For those that are working aquaculturists in general, this book is perhaps a bit specific, but serves as a model for how to write a concise and relevant guide to a species.
