This book is one of a series offered by Manson Publishing, known as the “Self-Assessment Colour Review Series” which covers a wide range of veterinary topics including Small Animal Soft Tissue Surgeries, Small Animal Dermatology and Small Animal Abdominal and Metabolic Disorders to name a few. Currently there are over 16 titles in this series. Veterinary Cytology is a book dedicated to clinical cases offered as problem-based, full-colour presentation of abnormal cytology slides. The book is a compilation of cases provided by 15 contributors representing the US, UK, France, West Indies and Spain.
A small paperback of 192 pages, the cytology cases are classified according to the anatomical area from which the samples are collected. The classification of slides includes the following systems: Cardiorespiratory, Ear, Nose & Throat (Otorhinolaryngological), Gastrointestinal, Liver, Lymphatics, Mammary Glands, Musculoskeletal, Reproduction, Skin and Urogenital. Additionally, cytology specimens associated with fluid and areas of infection and neoplasia involvement are discussed as well as a discussion on methodological practices are scattered throughout the book. The discussions are quick reminders to the reader of a variety of considerations related to sample preparation, quality control and analytical value of specimens.
The chapters are presented in a series of numbered color plates of cytology specimens along with the answers written in a concise yet engaging paragraph of corresponding numbers. There are a total of 165 plates, all beautifully photographed. There are 24 pages of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) to aid a student or novice cytologist in his/her quest to understand cytological preparations, staining and examination. Finally, rounding out this cool little book is a list of references and suggested readings to support the on-going study of cytology.
In rendering a ranking for this book, I feel this book would be a great addition to the library of any veterinary technician educator as well as technicians working in a diagnostic laboratory. Students would find this book useful in both research and use during laboratory sessions related to cytology. Veterinary technicians and veterinarians in clinical/medical practice may not find this book of use if most cytological specimens are sent out to diagnostic facilities for analysis. For this reason, I feel that 4 out of 5 stars is a fair rating.
