It has been ten years since the first edition of this text. The second edition has been expanded and updated to bring the reader information on both new medications as well as those that have been in use for years. This second edition focuses more on evidence based therapeutics and, to that end, comprehensive reviews of studies and clinical trials have been done to provide the reader with the most up to date and correct information available.
In order to promote judicious drug use, this text discusses the physiology of the organ systems of small animals and the pathophysiology of various diseases to assist the clinician in understanding why certain medications are used. The information covered includes when drug therapy is needed, information to assist with finding the appropriate drug, and the adverse effects of certain drugs.
The text begins with an introduction to drug use and includes chapters that discuss the principles of drug therapy, factors affecting drug disposition, pharmacogenetics, drug induced diseases, and therapeutic drug monitoring. The ensuing sections then cover drugs targeting infections or infestations, drugs targeting body systems, drugs acting on the nervous system, and drugs targeting inflammation or immunomodulation. Each section is broken down into specific chapters which, when relevant, include a list of medications with doses, route of administration, and intervals. While this text does include formularies, these are not as easy to access as a text that is meant to be used strictly as a formulary such as the Veterinary Drug Handbook by Donald Plumb.
This new and updated text includes evidence-based information that allows practioners to understand why certain medications are used and in doing so allows more judicious use of those medications. This text will be a valuable resource for those who ask why one medication is recommended above another, certainly a text that veterinarians and technicians alike will reach for when there are questions in their mind and choices to be made.
