The fields of biology and microbiology have expanded rapidly in recent years with better instrumentation, more in-depth study, and improved diagnostics. Since 2002, many changes have developed in this field making this update a much needed and appreciated effort.
The interest in this field has expanded to a worldwide level, and the updates in each of the chapters reflect the value of worldwide cooperation in these studies. New developments in immunodeficiency diseases, vaccines and vaccination, molecular diagnostic methods, antibacterial resistance, antifungal chemotherapy, antiviral chemotherapy, and microbial diseases of the urinary tract, cardiovascular system, musculoskeletal system and the integumentary system have been added. The international and public health significance of these pathogens is becoming an important world issue.
The book is written primarily for veterinary students, but with the deluge of new information in this discipline, it is important that the clinician out there working on cases is up-to-date on such topics as immunodeficiency diseases, antibacterial resistance, the full range of pathogenic bacteria currently identified, the identification and treatment of yeasts, fungi, mycotoxins and related chemotherapies, genetics and evolution of viruses, prions, and the role of these pathogens in diseases of the various systems and how they divide by sex as relates to the reproductive systems.
The subjects are described using flow charts showing the disease from infection to shedding. Of particular interest is the morph of stem cells to their mature states. Many of the charts will be charts you studied in veterinary school, but it is those charts that illustrate the recent information, the new information, and updated treatments that will be of the most interest. Many new color diagrams are incorporated.
If you are one of those people who likes to sit and peruse a book for updated material and gems of information, you will love this book.
