Having been a fan as well as a user of the previous versions of the APA Pocket Guide, I was most anxious to review the newly released fourth edition. As with previous editions, this version is easier to use than the APA Publications Manual as it cuts to the heart of proper APA citations and how to cite references in such a way as to always be in compliance. The ability to properly cite references in the Style of the American Psychological Association is something that everyone from students to established authors must be familiar with. With the continued publication of three journals dedicated to the scientific interests of veterinary technologists currently, the veterinary technician student as well as seasoned veterinary technicians may quickly find themselves called upon to contribute to these worthy journals. This requires being familiar with research as well as reference citation. For these needs, the Pocket Guide will become an invaluable resource.
The book is a pocket guide – literally, it will fit in ones’ pocket. It measures approximately 5 inches by 8 inches presented in a spiral bound, soft cover book of 155 pages. The book is broken down into nine chapters which allow the user to select the type of reference which they are currently interested in citing; for instance, books, audio-visual sources as well as electronic references. In this age of distance learning and electronic sources of reference, it is more important than ever that one correctly cite and acknowledge the works of those which they reference. While there are many books available addressing this subject, the Pocket Guide to APA Style is so convenient as to almost make “citing” painless and easy. As an added bonus, the last chapter of this handy little book presents sample papers for one to examine and compare for correctness of format and style. As a veterinary technician who has spent much time trying to perfect her own skills as a writer (a never-ending process to be sure), I wholeheartedly endorse this book and give it a 5 star rating. It is a text that is useful to anyone from technician students to seasoned veterinary technologists to veterinarians if they are involved in writing and are in need of a quick reference.
