The publishing company Elsevier has established a history of providing innovative and exciting textbooks that are aimed specifically at the education of veterinary technicians. This second edition of Large Animal Clinical Procedures is not an exception to the excellence that educators have come to expect. Before even delving into the book, one is treated to a list of free study tools that one gains instant access to upon purchasing the text. The list is a factor of encouragement for anyone undertaking the study of large animal medicine at a veterinary technician’s level as well as addressing the needs of veterinary technician educators. Among the tools offered are an image collection and several supplemental chapters to add to ones knowledge base.
The book is broken down into seven chapters over a total of 575 pages which includes: The Livestock Industry, Large Animal Hospital Management, Horses in the Veterinary Practice and Cattle in the Veterinary Practice, Sheep and Goats in Veterinary Practice. The chapters are laid out in a concise and engaging manner with case studies and clinical applications added. The best part of this book however is the 1200 photographic and pictorial guides depicting the performance of techniques such as parasite identification, breed identification, tail wraps, leg wraps, surgical preparation and assisting, just to name a few. There is a definitive focus on the role of the veterinary technician in the presentation of these and other tasks which is solid in presentation. This book has it all and will meet the needs of veterinary technician students, veterinary educators and even those already working in large animal medicine. While veterinarians perhaps will not find this book useful for their own reference purposes, they may; however, find it useful for their technicians. For this reason, anyone involved in large animal medicine should take a serious look at this book. The text merits a solid five star rating.
