This is the third revision (first edition as a soft cover) of this text which does an excellent job of providing the small animal practioner with valuable information on the cardiovascular system. The text is broken down into three sections: Section One provides an introduction, Section Two discusses the clinical signs associated with cardiovascular disease as well as the management of those clinical sign, and Section Three discusses the aforementioned cardiovascular diseases in detail.
Section One does an exceptional job of discussing the normal function of the cardiovascular system including anatomy, conduction, and circulation. It also delves into changes seen on the physical exam and diagnostic tools, such as radiology and echocardiography. Section Two may be the most valuable of the three sections as it addresses the clinical signs that can be seen with cardiovascular disease. In addition to the obvious signs such as murmurs, arrhythmias, and heart failure, it also covers cough, respiratory distress, jugular vein distention, subcutaneous edema, syncope, and thromboembolic disease. There are multiple pictures depicting patients during the exhibition of these clinical signs therefore allowing the reader to relate the text to actual clinical cases. The third section discusses specific cardiovascular diseases including congenital, acquired, myocardial, pulmonary hypertension, and pericardial diseases in great detail.
This easy-to-read text breaks down the complicated topic of veterinary cardiovascular medicine, making it clear-cut and easy to understand. There are multiple tables and flow charts that provide valuable information to facilitate the diagnostics, treatment, and management of specific clinical signs and diseases. Also included are ECG examples and post-mortem pictures of the cardiovascular system for review by the reader and comparison to cases which they may be involved in.
This text fulfills two needs for the veterinary community. It provides an in-depth discussion of cardiovascular disease as well as providing treatment and management strategies. This text is useful not only as a reference for the practicing veterinarian but also as a supplemental text for the veterinary student. Veterinary technicians may find this helpful should they be involved in a cardiovascular-oriented clinical practice.
