This book is Out of Print. You may purchase the latest edition on Amazon.com.

This book opens with a nice surprise—on the frontispiece there is a code to access an on-line selection of client handouts for your own use.

Keeping up with current therapies is difficult at best, even for those who regularly attend CE. The canine/feline five-minute consult books have been there for the clinician since 1997, and have become an integral part of the modern practice. Granted, there are many in-depth internal medicine texts, but for the veterinarian with a client in a room, hoping to go in prepared, there is no substitute for this book.

Of course, the perfect plan is that the veterinarian is already well versed on the illness being presented, but knowing that you have all of the most recent information ready is a great confidence builder.

This edition has changed from the last in that the division of each topic into sections has been eliminated, as not all diseases fitted the format and it was detracting from the subject to try to fit all diseases into a specified format. There is still a certain order in the presentation of disease topics, but you will find a different order in some cases.

The topics are arranged alphabetically so that one does not necessarily need to refer to the Table of Contents. The TOC is useful for specifics, i.e.: Adenocarcinoma is alphabetized by system—Anal sac, Lung, Nasal, etc. There are 1,335 topics shown, plus a wide range of appendices and tables. One of the most useful of these is the last one: Hotlines every veterinarian should know. These are setup for emergency use as they are all telephone numbers and not web sites or e-mail addresses.

One section that should be reviewed prior to need is the appendix section. It would be useful to know what topics are covered in the tables and lists in the back of the book. There is everything from hematologic values to toxic home/garden hazards, to drugs—contraindication and dosages, to fears and phobias.

Each section covers each disease on one page, sometimes two, but rarely longer. There is an overview, signalments are presented, signs follow, then a differential diagnoses, suggested treatment/ medications, what to do in a follow-up, and miscellaneous comments. This format is loosely followed, as best it can be related to the details of the disease.

In most cases, the section ends with suggested reading. The follow-up section may include such topics as zoonotic potential, breeding/pregnancy cautions.

It is noticeable that in cases where chemotherapy is in order, the reader is advised to consult with an oncologist for information on the most recent chemical therapy. This path seems to be more popular recently as noted in other books.

It is interesting to note that in many sections, the Internet resource recommended is VIN. Not all sections make this recommendation; perhaps it is the choice of the author rather than the publisher.

In the publisher's description, it says: "More than 300 top specialists provide complete coverage of 838 specific disorders, with dozens of new topics and existing topics thoroughly revised to include the latest research." Reviewer's note: Almost all are Diplomates in their field, so "specialist" is probably appropriate.

Certainly a must-have for every clinic. It is entirely possible that one would refer to this book on a daily basis.
