This book provides a much needed text for the imaging of exotic pets. It provides, in detail, how to restrain for and perform various types of imaging, normal findings, and pathological changes seen with certain disease processes. The book is divided into three sections (birds, small mammals, and reptiles) with each section divided into two parts (general principles and special diagnostics, pathological findings). Each section includes differences found within each species. The first section covers birds and includes domesticated birds and raptors. The second section covers small mammals and includes rabbits, chinchillas, ferrets, and guinea pigs with the emphasis being placed on rabbits and ferrets. The third section covers reptiles including turtles, lizards, tortoises, and snakes.
The first part of each section talks about how to position for radiographs, taking into consideration the safety of the patient and technician. Normal findings are discussed for diagnostics including ultrasound, CT, MRI, contrast studies, and within the small mammal section, echocardiography. The second part of each section discusses pathological findings arranged by organ system. To help guide the clinician to the correct procedure, it discusses clinical signs that indicate which diagnostic is appropriate for a given situation. Normal variations are also included for reference.
The most valuable part of this book is the hundreds of pictures demonstrating how to position the patient and expected visuals of findings on ultrasound, MRI, CT, and echocardiography. This book is a valuable tool for the clinician who treats exotics or the radiologist or technician who images exotics and will be a prized addition to their library. As a side note the book was written and published in German and has been translated to English.
