As described in the books’ forward, “bandaging is both an art and a science.” This statement is clearly the truth when it comes to bandaging, casting, or splinting the small animal patient. This book was written by authors with vast clinical and research experience and they introduce bandaging techniques that have been successfully applied in the management of wounds and orthopedic injuries. The first chapter of this text discusses the basics of bandaging, casting, and splinting. This includes purposes and functions of a bandage/cast/splint, components of a bandage (primary, secondary, and tertiary layers), splinting and casting materials, and special considerations (security, changing frequency, sedation, etc). The book is then broken down into chapters by anatomic location: Head and Ear Bandages, Thoracic/Abdominal/Pelvic Bandages, and Extremity Bandages/Casts/Splints. Each chapter is further broken down by more specific anatomic location and purpose covering more than 22 separate applications throughout the text. With each technique the book covers specific indications, application techniques, aftercare, advantages and associated complications. Tips are included to improve patient comfort, and prevent bandage/cast/splint associated complications. All application techniques are simply described in a step-by-step format with color photos accompanying each step which is what really makes this book a valuable tool. The final chapter discusses the myriad of devices (commercial and homemade) that can be used to deter patients from damaging their bandages/casts/splints.
This book was a welcome addition to my personal library. There were several practical tips in this book that I will use in the future to improve the comfort and effectiveness of bandages for future patients. The step-by-step format and color photos make this text a quick and helpful reference tool in clinical practice. This book would be a great training tool for those new to bandaging the small animal patient and as a quick reference for veterinarians, and veterinary technicians experienced in bandaging techniques.
