With multiple contributors from around the globe, this book covers the various aspects of ultrasound of the ruminant and camelid using the bovine as the main example. This book would no doubt be valuable to the practioner who is considering using ultrasound to enhance the reproductive side of their practice. Chapters one and two cover the types of ultrasounds and probes, basic concepts and scanning techniques. The illustrations and pictures brought the conceptual information together and made it easier to grasp.
Other chapters explore the proper ways to perform an ultrasound and interpret what is seen. Topics include fetal development, sexing, anomalies, and ultrasound of the bull. There is also a chapter devoted to special procedures including embryo transfer and oocyte collection. The book contains multiple pictures and illustrations to help the reader visualize what is being discussed, something that I found very helpful. The majority of the book covers bovine reproductive ultrasonography techniques, while the last three chapters cover buffalo, zebu cattle, sheep, goats, and camelids. These chapters are noticeably less extensive with fewer examples of what you may find on ultrasonography then the previous bovine-dedicated chapters. If you are looking for a book with extensive information on the latter mentioned species you will be disappointed. If however you are looking for a book of good solid and basic information, this may be the one for you.
The book lives up to its claim to be a “Practical Atlas” and I think the pictures and illustration are its most valuable contribution to the topic. The book is lightweight and thin making it the perfect on-site reference.
Overall this book is an excellent resource for the veterinary clinician or veterinary technician starting down the road of ruminant reproduction and would be a welcome addition to any library.
