Dr. Sophia Yin by her own admission: “vowed never to write another textbook, including a new Nerdbook edition.” Lucky for veterinary students as well as veterinary technology students she did not keep her vow. She instead has put together the third edition, her second revision since “the vow” and it is jam-packed with great resources for those in the field of veterinary medicine. While the book is designed to aid students in getting through school, clinical rotations, and board examinations, I have noticed at least one clinician within my job setting who has The Nerdbook regularly peeking out of their lab jacket.
The Nerdbook measures small enough to easily carry in one’s lab coat, is paperback so that it can be opened, flexed and stretched to ones hearts content and it endures. Although this is a book designed for students of veterinary medicine, students studying for veterinary technology credentialing will also benefit from this book.
The book is divided into twenty-one chapters with each chapter being a comprehensive, no-fluff approach to the subject matter. The chapters are complete with charts for quick reference and instructions for every conceivable thing one could want to do in a clinical situation. The chapters include the following areas: Anesthesia, Bacteriology, Cardiology, Clinical Pathology, Cytology, Dentistry, Dermatology, Emergency Medicine, Endocrinology, Gastrointestinal Disorders, Infectious Diseases, Neurology, Nutrition, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Parasitology, Pulmonary, Canine Reproduction, Toxicology and Disorders of the Urinary System.
In closing, Dr. Yin has remained busy and engaged within the academics of veterinary medicine with multiple books to her credit on the subject of canine behavior as well as a website devoted to among other things - Nerdbook extras as well as regular e-mail updates in the form of a regularly received newsletter.
As a veterinary technician educator, I do not plan to be without this book peeking out of my lab jacket ever again. As one with lots of students to work with, I have found a multitude of usages within labs and practical exercises for this book. I feel it is a book which anyone (veterinarian, veterinary technician or educational clinician) in the field of veterinary medicine should not be without hence the reason for a 5 star rating (Hint, hint: great idea for a starter library for the veterinary or veterinary technician student).
