Working with animals within a bio-containment area presents special challenges and problems. This 296 page, soft cover book is organized into twenty four chapters covering relevant topics such as: medical surveillance for personnel working with animals, transport of infectious material, animal bio-safety level determinations, safety in the biomedical laboratory, bio-containment for animal agriculture pathogens, animal bio-safety level 3: facility design considerations and advanced technologies in animal research.
When working with animals, care must be taken to prevent the spread of disease. In research, this is extremely important so as to avoid corruption of data, protect personnel, and ensure that the animals themselves are protected from inadvertent exposure to infectious agents. Laboratory personnel must be aware of the additional hazards of any zoonotic disease potential involved before becoming involved in studies or exposure. This reference although geared towards the research field would be useful for veterinary hospitals as well.
Although this book is written for those who are actively working with animals in research, it would be a good reference for the veterinary personnel, both practitioner and veterinary technicians who may find themselves dealing with infectious diseases. For that reason, I gave it 4 out of 5 stars.
