This anthology is one of a series that are designed for the various areas of bio-safety as related to animals. The 178 pages of this soft cover book are organized into twelve chapters which include: Arthropod vectors and their role in transmitting pathogens to humans and animals, laboratory acquired infections, working safely with recombinant viruses and vectors, organizing and carrying out work with animals under stationary laboratory and field conditions and bio-safety practices in field research: A reviewed experience.
While many vector borne diseases were once thought to be effectively controlled, it has become apparent in the last few years of accidental release that this is not always the case. Further publicity at the hands of Hollywood and a handful of bestselling authors of medical thrillers has increased public awareness and fascination with all things related to handling of live and sometimes deadly organisms. Due to the redirection of resources, many hazardous diseases have re-emerged as major public health concerns globally. This reference is well written for personnel working with arthropod vectors in the research setting. Personnel safety in the research arena is important whether it is in the controlled setting of the laboratory or in the field, something that is addressed within this book concerning handling of arthropods.
This is a good reference for anyone working in the research of vector borne diseases. While many of the chapters are relevant for veterinary personnel in clinical practice, the book is most useful for those in the research arena. For that reason, I gave it 3 out of 5 stars.
