The mission of the American Association of Equine Veterinary Technicians is to protect the health and welfare of the horse through the education and professional enrichment of the equine veterinary technician and assistant. To this end, Deborah Reeder, et al, set out to create a comprehensive, horse specific reference focusing on issues encountered in equine practice.
With both writing and editorial contributions by veterinary technicians for veterinary technicians this book also contains an extensive list of distinguished contributing writers drawn from both academia and private practice bringing a broad spectrum of experience to its pages. The book contains fifteen chapters that give an overview of general management, nutrition, applied anatomy and physiology, reproduction, basic wellness, foal care, pharmacology, laboratory diagnostics, anaesthesia, surgical assistance, nursing care, technical procedures, diagnostic procedures, common emergencies and last but not least office procedures. A list of common acronyms and abbreviations is included as well as numerous photographs, diagrams, micrographs and samples of common forms needed in equine practice are found within the chapters. Additionally, for those requiring more information, each chapter ends with a list of recommended reading for further education.
Unfortunately, the authors did not include a glossary of basic terminology; something they may wish to consider in future editions. Otherwise, this book written for veterinary technicians and veterinary technician students requiring horse specific scientific as well as practical knowledge delivers, as promised, a modern comprehensive manual. It will be a great addition to the libraries of veterinary technicians/students and perhaps even veterinary students seeking to gain a better understanding of common procedures performed in equine practice. Overall, I feel this book will take a rightful place as an industry leader and I am delighted to include it in my library.
