Pathology and Parasitology for Veterinary Technicians was written for students of veterinary technology, pre-veterinary and animal science programs. The text is broken into two main parts as described in the book’s title. The portion on pathology includes ten chapters beginning with a brief discussion on the history and development of the study of disease. The second chapter offers a good basic overview of cell injury and death with black and white anatomical illustrations included throughout. The remaining chapters deal with pathology including Fluid and Circulatory Disturbances; Neoplasia: An Introduction to Tumors; Immunological Diseases; Mechanisms and Causes of Infectious Disease; Genetic Disorders; Environmental and Nutritional Diseases; and Zoonoses and Safety on the Job.
The chapter regarding Zoonoses addresses the importance of occupational safety, public health, and provides an overview of the more common zoonotic diseases encountered within veterinary practice. The parasitology portion includes five chapters broken down by large/small animals, as well as ectoparasites/endoparasites. A good overview of parasitic life cycles and methods of diagnosis are included for each parasite discussed. Black and white photographs are provided of the more common parasites. Each chapter introduces a list of key terms for the reader to learn. A list of review questions concludes each chapter for review or teaching purposes.
This textbook has an additional selection of instructional guides which include: an appendix entitled Important Techniques for Veterinary Technicians which provides a good, easy to follow how-to guide on a variety of clinical techniques such as making blood smears, fecal flotation, skin scrapings and fine-needle-aspirations. Illustrations as well as black and white photographs are used to describe some of the procedures. A CD image library accompanies the narrative guide appendix at the end of the book. The CD contains color photographs of the diagnostic stage of many parasites and pathologic conditions. There are post-mortem photographs of a variety of diseases including splenic hemangiosarcoma, endocardiosis, neonatal canine herpes, and a myriad of other conditions. A great library of microscopic images of adult parasites and related ova aid the reader in identifying parasites microscopically; with a narrative that offers a brief description of each image.
This book offers a good, basic overview of pathology and parasitology for the pre-veterinary or technician student. This book would also likely be a good, quick reference for the technician in clinical practice mostly due to its section on parasitology and parasite image library as well as veterinarians looking for a new additional reference for their collection.
