Most of this book would be useful to the veterinary student, a recent graduate, or the surgical assistant. There is a large part of the book devoted to such basics as how to drape an animal for various procedures, how to handle instruments, how to hand off instruments to another person, how to scrub and gown yourself, counting sponges, preparing a surgical pack, and generally setting up for surgery. A good book to keep in the break room for picking up when time permits.

For the surgeon actually doing the surgery, there are chapters on the basics of wound closure and healing. Surgical drains and tubes are described as well as how to apply and anchor them.

For the new veterinarian, unsure of him/herself, there are step-by-step color photos on placing drains in the intestine, and there are 113 pages, 2 photos to a page, on doing an ovariohysterectomy. It looks like a photo was snapped every 10 seconds throughout the surgery. The chapter goes from an animal on the table ready to be scrubbed, to the final stitch in closing. Of course, nothing goes wrong and all parts are easy to find and identify.

There is a section on knot-tying, complete with illustrations and directions, also, a section on suture materials and basic suture patterns.

The book closes with a good chapter on postsurgical pain management, followed by patient aftercare and follow-up.

Most of the chapters are illustrated with drawings by Dr. Constantinescu.

The experienced surgeon will likely not use this book too frequently, but I would recommend it as reading material for all techs who assist in surgery, all recent graduates, and all students.
