For the clinician in a busy practice, this book will be invaluable. This is a book of detailed instructions for common and not-so-common procedures. Not an instruction book for surgery, this book covers those essential tests and in-patient procedures needed for a complete workup.
The chapters are set up in alphabetical order according to procedure, Abdominocentesis first, Whole blood clotting time last. Each procedure is offered in a standard format: Indications; Use; Contraindications; Equipment; Patient preparation and positioning; Technique; Sample Handling; Potential complications.
At the end of each topic is an illustration of an open book with an accompanying text giving the reader another reference source for additional information in the form of other BSAVA publications. There is extensive cross-referencing to guide the clinician to the desired topic. If you are looking under "N" for "Nasal Biopsy", the book anticipates your hurry to find the topic and under "Nasal" it sends you to "Rhinoscopy" for the actual section.
Photos and drawings accompany the text where necessary. It's not a photographically instructional book, but the instructions are adequately detailed so that these procedures might be performed easily by the reader. If an assistant is necessary, it is so stated so that one might be prepared before beginning a procedure.
