Anyone who is familiar with Dr. Bellows would expect this book to be precise and this is what is delivered. The beginning chapters bring one through detailed discussions of anatomy, the oral exam, and radiology. When I say “detailed” I mean he gives the information needed for a general practitioner, like myself, to practice good veterinary dentistry. He does not burden us with the esoteric minutiae one needs to know to be board certified. The book is filled with abundant drawings, color photographs, and radiographs to superbly illustrate each subject discussed. There are multiple examples of the different charting methods used to succinctly record one’s findings and treatments. Even examples of instruments and machinery are photographed rather than just being mentioned.

All aspects of veterinary dentistry are discussed. Subjects that are also common to canine practice, e.g., endodontics, are discussed in less detail than feline-common problems, such as tooth resorption. This is apropos as there is no need to repeat in a feline oriented text information that can be found in multiple other sources. Dr. Bellows enumerates in great detail the problem and treatment of tooth resorption. He uses text, drawings, radiographs, and color photographs to bring one through the entire problem, step by step, from examination through treatment options. Temporomandibular joint dislocation diagnosis and treatment is well documented in his sections on anatomy and oral trauma surgery. Much attention is also devoted to oropharyngeal inflammation, another frustrating aspect of feline dentistry. Of course, there are chapters on pathology, periodontal disease, occlusal disorders, and oral swellings and tumors.

A textbook cannot be “perfect”. After all, we would not want our experts to get swollen heads. (Please remember, it is very easy to find fault with someone else’s monumental task while I did absolutely not one iota of the work). So, here we go. There were several errors mainly relating to labeling of the pictures and radiographs. They were more or less typographical and did not change the obvious meaning/intent of the author. I feel only one (mathematical) error needs to be specifically mentioned. On page 175 the maximum dosage for local anesthesia is given and then the example doubles that amount. I asked Dr. Bellows aout the discrepancy. He confirmed this was an error but "due to the safety of local anesthetic there would not be an issue". Number two criticism: there is no glossary. I did not find this to actually be a problem, probably because Dr. Bellows did such an excellent presentation. However, most texts usually have a glossary. Number three: a very small number of the (many) photographs had reflections of light from the moisture in the mouth that made it difficult to see the subject clearly. These are such minor points that I stand accused by myself of actually searching for something to criticize. In other words, this is an excellent book that I highly recommend for anyone who treats cats. If one does not do even a dental prophy on a cat (I cannot imagine there is any such small animal veterinarian) this book is a must for showing the client what is/may be happening in their cat’s mouth and why the pet needs to be taken to a veterinary dentist.
