The title of this book is simultaneously informative and misleading. It is very much an atlas; its strength lies in the copious ultrasound images used to illustrate each aspect of the techniques described. And it is very practical, very much a hands-on teaching tool. However the vast majority of the book is devoted to the bovine.

Chapters 1 and 2 cover basic principles and concepts of ultrasonography. Chapters 3-8 cover the cow: anatomy, pregnancy, fetal development, and special reproductive procedures. Chapter 9 covers the bull while Chapter 10 covers water buffalo and zebu. Chapter 11 covers sheep and goats while Chapter 12 covers camelids.

As stated previously, the strength of this book is the atlas concept it utilizes. In addition to the many ultrasound images, I really liked the use of real reproductive tract organs to illustrate scanning techniques and the correct positioning of the ultrasound probes.

The emphasis on the bovine, however, seems somewhat overdone and I’m unsure of the utility of the water buffalo and zebu chapter. I’m sure small ruminant practitioners will enjoy the sheep and goat chapter but the camelid chapter seems particularly thin.

All in all, this book takes a basic utilitarian approach to an important topic and I think overall succeeds in what the editors set out to accomplish.  I would think this book to be most useful to practitioners just learning these techniques who are looking for a primer to teach themselves how to use that new portable ultrasound they just bought.
