This book is written as a step-by-step guide for all activities which a veterinary technician might be called on to perform within the genre of large animal medicine. There are five sections which address the following areas: Care & Restraint Techniques, Physical Examination, Sample Collection & Clinical Procedures, Surgical, Radiographic & Anesthetic Preparation and Appendix. Each of these sections addresses a prolific amount of information on each subject as it pertains to the care of horses, cattle, small ruminants, llamas and pigs.
As an example of the way that this book is designed and laid out, the author presents the simple task of completing a physical examination on a cow. The instructions are presented in a two-fold method: technical action as well as rationale amplification. The amplification is presented in a numerically ordered list beginning with the observation of the animal to be examined before handling and ending with a hands-on exam of each part of the cow’s body. Other procedures such as applying a lower leg wrap or dealing with medical issues such as a prolapsed vagina have detailed instructions as well as beautiful color plates for helpful illustration.
The book is an excellent textbook for any students who are currently studying the comprehensive subject of large animal medicine. This book is extremely useful to any veterinary technician as well as veterinarians as a superb book of reference to have on hand in a clinic that serves large animal clients. As a veterinary technician who is currently employed within a university setting veterinary technician program, the reviewer feels that this book is absolutely essential to the study and instruction of large animal medicine. It is wholeheartedly recommended that anyone with an interest in the field of large animal medicine buy this book post haste.
