Elsevier-Saunders has recently published a box set of veterinary anatomy flash cards which really excited this reviewer. Comprised of 360 cards which support and correspond to any of the many veterinary anatomy textbooks published by Elsevier, these cards use the canine, feline, equine, porcine, ruminant and avian species to showcase both common and species-specific anatomical features of importance to veterinary technician students as well as those enrolled in the more terminal study of veterinary medicine.
Made up of seven color coded sections, students are taken through the body from nose to tail with each section utilizing the six aforementioned species for instructional purposes. For instance the first section, edged in rich turquoise, addresses the various portions and views of the head and ventral neck. Students can locate the species needed quickly based on encircled pictures found in the upper left hand corner of the card. The next six sections include: neck, back and vertebral column (orange), thorax (lavender), abdomen (peach), pelvis and reproductive organs (yellow), forelimb (periwinkle blue) and hind limbs (rose). The pictures are a mixture of labeled radiographic images, colored line drawings and color photographs. The front of each card has an image with numbered prompts; when turned over, the back of the card provides the answers.
The cards may be used by a single student to test their knowledge or by groups of students testing each other. While students will find these cards an invaluable reference for study test preparation, instructors will also find the card set useful for the purpose of both classroom review and testing. Clinically speaking, these cards will not necessarily find a use within the clinic or local veterinary hospital. However as an adjunct instructor who also serves as the laboratory technician for the anatomy and physiology laboratory sections, this reviewer plans to make these cards available both to lab sessions as well as the individual students striving to further their knowledge of the study of veterinary anatomy and physiology.
