This final volume of this three book series is perhaps the best to date for those who work regularly with fish and other aquatic species. With thirty-two contributing authors and twenty chapters, this text addresses both common and uncommon health issues related to infection by bacterial, viral and fungal agents. The authors represent experts in the field of aquaculture from North America, Asia and Europe. The titles are exciting and engaging on a variety of subjects including Hemorrhagic Septicemia, Rickettsia, Yersinia and Necrosis of an array of organs. The reviewer was particularly excited by Chapter 12, which addressed Yersinia rickeri, as she made an association between Yersinia and Bubonic Plague. However, she was relieved to find that Y. rickeri, commonly called “Enteric Redmouth Disease”, did not implicate a Bubonic Plague epidemic among fish; rather, this enterococcal Gram negative bacteria was seen more in fish stressed by inappropriate husbandry, although the presence of positive cases have been seen in naturally occurring river water samples. Other chapters address equally fascinating topics.

As a veterinary technologist and instructor of epidemiology in academia, the reviewer was particularly drawn to Chapter 19, entitled: “Applying Epidemiology to Infectious Diseases of Fish.” This chapter provides a review of epidemiological concepts and how it can be applied to fish research in a variety of situations. Dr. Thornburn of the Ontario Veterinary College simplifies the most commonly used bio-statistical formulas while applying them to realtime fish studies of epidemiological importance. He then elaborates on various methods of sampling and for what type of study they are most appropriate.

Most chapters are supported by fifty or more reference citations and in addition to the address of a chosen topic there is overly sufficient exploration on future needs for research. While this is a beautifully written book, it is not a book that would be essential for veterinarians or veterinary technicians currently in a clinical practice. It is however a great resource for those engaged in aquaculture research. For this reason, the reviewer gives a three star rating; however, in terms of regarding the book strictly on academic merit to students, it would merit a much higher rating.
