Seventeen contributors worked on this book, not unusual except when you learn that all of the contributors were students at the University of Tennessee, class of 2008. Dr. Tobias is on the faculty at UT, and the author of many scientific papers and several textbooks. The UT class of 2009 did the peer review and editing, under the supervision of Dr. Tobias.
Each chapter contains sub-headings, each of which address a single surgery from beginning to closing. The surgeries are illustrated with clean, well-lighted photos and crisp, detailed drawings. The subjects are neat and free of debris or blood, useful for visualizing the surgery.
There are a lot of little hints and tips built in that should provide further education for the budding surgeon. They are not highlighted as "tips" but the surgeon reading this text will find them. Each surgery is explained step-by-step along with the accompanying photos and, where necessary, radiographs. The text is succinct and easy to follow, presenting the surgeries in their most practical and logical format.
The book is organized by procedure type and includes sections on surgery of the skin, abdomen, digestive system, reproductive tract, perineal, head and neck, and miscellaneous procedures, Each chapter contains an introduction, tips for preoperative management, surgery and surgical techniques, and postoperative considerations.
The book would be most useful for students and recent graduates, but I feel sure that even an experienced surgeon will benefit from this book.
