In the second of a three volume set, Woo and Leatherland have compiled a work with the help of twenty contributors that examines the identification, effects, treatment and implications of a variety of non-infectious diseases found to affect fin and shell fish populations. Over the course of thirteen chapters the writers address such areas as genetic disorders, carcinogenic and neoplastic disorders and the health issues which come about as a result of piscine exposure to such pollutants as heavy metals, gases, organic compounds and pH issues. Each chapter is also heavily referenced by key European and North American expert sources.

For those who have ever wondered about the incidence of Siamese twinning in Tilapia, this book will answer that question and many more on areas of concern to those charged with aquacultural husbandry. While this volume addresses fish as sentinels of the water, it also takes a critical look at disorders of the cardiovascular and respiratory system, stress factors and husbandry disorders commonly seen. In support of the various topics presented in this text, there are beautiful pictures of gross deformity examination as well as a corresponding black-and-white micrograph of histological results of tissue biopsies. Although all pictures are black-and-white, they are incredibly detailed.

After reading this book as a MPH graduate with an interest in agricultural public health, I was awed by the section on the various effects seen as a result of environmental pollution and later totally blown away as a veterinary technician by the histology, treatment and prevention methods discussed. And while this volume has not seen second edition re-write (such as the first volume in 2006), it is extremely pertinent to any veterinary technician or veterinarian currently working within the field of fin fish medicine and aquaculture.
