Twenty-five persons contributed to this book, and their expertise is evident by the content. One of the best books I have seen on veterinary nursing, it does need a tiny bit of translation from British terminology to American for the USA audience.
As stated in the title, this is for the instruction of advanced nursing skills. This takes the technician past the routine and into the realm of specialized nursing care, critical care, supporting anesthetic services, as well as some minor surgery or radiography. Administrative and management responsibilities are also mentioned.
Chapters cover triage, differential diagnoses, monitoring and maintaining blood pressure, and minor biopsy techniques, to name just a few.
The fact that this is British explains why many of the procedures shown are not generally done by technicians here in the US, but if they are, it is generally within the parameters of the individual practice, governed by the level of supervision of the acting veterinarian.
The chapter on exercises for physical therapy are especially interesting, as are the chapters on Imaging and Pathology. In many instances, the nursing care described in this book overlaps well into veterinary technique and treatment. While some of the procedures may not be utilized by nursing staff in the USA, knowledge of how they work will greatly enhance the quality of technical (nursing) care.
Text boxes capture essential areas of information, and the quality of the color photos is excellent throughout.
