There are sixteen contributors to this manual, including Chris Chamness, who has worked closely with veterinarians for many years as the rep from Storz. This book should reach its goal of helping practitioners learn the skills necessary to perform this minimally-invasive surgical and diagnostic technology.

For someone who wishes to improve the skills involved in endoscopic surgery, this is the way. The illustrations hold your hand and walk you through procedures, and the text explains it while it warns you of potential pitfalls. The examples are relevant and useful.

From visualizing encrusted ear canals to performing ovariohysterectomies, the advantages to the recovery of the patient and the ease of procedures will continue to be realized.

Nothing is worse than paying for a new piece of equipment and not being able to fully utilize it. I can see that this book will make it possible to incorporate the endoscope into the most modest clinic. Of course, nothing takes the place of live CE using the same equipment that you have in the clinic, but this book will go a long way toward making the purchase of an endoscope a worthwhile investment.

For the surgeon, the education in this minimally invasive procedure will help increase client satisfaction and patient recovery. For a young practice, the expense of equipment necessary to feature this type of surgery, plus the cost of CE, will be recouped in a relatively short time period. The book covers all necessary instrumentation and explains the use of each instrument.

Not every surgical procedure will benefit from endoscopic technique, and open surgery will not be replaced in many cases, but the use of some of these advanced modalities such as ultrasound, CT, and MRI will enable more focused targeting of affected tissues. More reasonably priced tools such as diode lasers, electrocautery, and the harmonic scalpel are all available to improve surgical precision.

The book covers both flexible and rigid endoscopy, with emphasis on the rigid endoscopic techniques. Drawings and photos illustrate targeting and positioning for more accurate procedures. There is even a section on knot-tying techniques, which I have not seen for a while.

Surgeries from rectal tumors to rhinoscopy are covered, and most in-between.

As with all BSAVA publications, there is some translation from British measurements and spelling, but that is a minor thing. Overall, this book will prove highly useful in the surgery and I recommend it for all practices.
