First and foremost it is important to this reviewer that the reader realizes that this workbook has been reviewed both as a teaching tool for veterinary technician students as well as a review for the technician in need of anatomical and physiological reminders. Over seven hundred pictures are accompanied by clearly defined terms as well as challenging worksheets. As an introduction as well as in “support” of the textbook, each chapter begins with a strong briefing of pertinent information relevant to the understanding of each body system as technicians need to understand. From the first chapter to the last, this book provides an enjoyable as well as informative method for learning and the reinforcement of one's knowledge of animal anatomy and physiology. As an example, the first chapter addresses anatomical direction with pictures of live animals that are 3-D and very imaginative instead of the familiar flat line drawings of the past.
The second chapter addresses microscopy and is very in-depth in the instruction of how to use, care for, and maintain a common bright-field microscope. This reviewer feels that the second chapter is an imperative chapter for both students and seasoned technicians. It may be of benefit to working technicians to review this chapter as a means of troubleshooting and maintaining practice microscopes. For students, this chapter may prevent many accidents within the laboratory involving microscope usage.
The third through fifteenth chapters offer in-depth coverage of each body system in an average of thirty pages. Each workbook chapter challenges the student through both traditional and non-traditional exercises not previously seen in workbooks addressing anatomy and physiology. In the tradition of past workbooks there are fill-in-the-blank, labeling (both line drawings and photographs) and multiple choice; however there are also challenging, get-your-attention games. The workbook authors have utilized society’s love of doodling and the entertainment of gaming as a viable method of educating technician students with crossword puzzles and challenges to draw both individual organs and complete organ systems.
This book may not serve a practicing veterinarian well in the practice setting; however, student technicians and those who are preparing to sit for state boards or in need of a general review on the subject of anatomy and physiology would greatly benefit from this book as a self-study of the subject matter. The reviewer would encourage anyone who is interested in anatomy and physiology of animal species to take a serious look at this book as well as the accompanying textbook. Each book supports the other and provides a great resource. As for instructors who teach in the field of veterinary technology especially in the area of anatomy and physiology, the best endorsement that the reviewer can give to this set of books is that they have recommended the text and workbook for the veterinary technician program in which they work, which was in the market for a change in resources for the anatomy and physiology class.
