The updated and expanded edition of Infectious Diseases of the Dog and Cat, Third Edition, lends many improvements and comprehensive updates in the information needed by the clinical small animal veterinarian, internist, advanced clinical technician and perhaps even wildlife biologist. Beginning with the Table of Contents which breaks down the chapters into sections, the defining categories include Viral (including Rickettsial, Chlamydial and Mycoplamas), Bacterial, Fungal, and Protozoal Diseases, and finally Clinical Problems.

In this well laid out text, each chapter has the following sections on each disease: Etiology, Epidemiology & Pathogenesis, Clinical Findings, Diagnosis, Pathologic Findings, Therapy, and Prevention. Within these various sections there are also separate areas addressing the differences seen in feline and canine manifestations of specific diseases, therapeutics, immunization, prescribing information and product manufacturing sources deemed helpful in treatment. Environmental control issues, zoonosis and possible bioterrorism disease components are important inclusions which makes this text useful for the veterinary hospital staff.

The organization of chapters by areas of interest and a thorough indexing makes this reference one that one preferentially reaches for. Providing information beyond magazine articles or smaller texts (unable to cover the depth of pathophysiology available within this book) makes it stand out as a truly comprehensive reference. The addition of a searchable CD-ROM brings the user internet access of referenced and hypertext links on PubMed and Medline, allowing cross referencing of full abstracts related to each chapter. This brings an immense amount of knowledge from many authors quite literally to the fingertips.

The focus audience of this text is best described as the fact finding reader, seeking not to read a cover to cover comprehensive on all canine and feline disease issues but rather as a solid, go-to-the source reference guide on small animal infectious disease issues. If the reader is familiar and appreciates the layout of other texts such as Schalm’s Hematology or Fossum’s Veterinary Surgery, this book will find a space in your clinical library, without reservation.

With the only small downside being identified by the author as that of a respectable price tag, this is a text that would be called upon for years to come with both time and money well spent.
