I like the general layout of this book as it has many topic headings in bold and in color, as well as tables and boxes to highlight important points. Some points are bold to accentuate their importance to the subject being discussed.

As in all of the books I favor, the text is planned to walk the reader through a logical progression starting with the basics of exam and diagnosis, then on to disease and treatment issues. There are 16 chapters:

  1. Examination and Diagnostics
  2. Diseases and Surgery of the Canine Orbit
  3. Diseases and Surgery of the Canine Eyelid
  4. Diseases and Surgery of the Tear and Nasolacrimal Systems
  5. Diseases and Surgery of the Canine Conjunctiva and Nictitating Membrane
  6. Diseases and Surgery of the Canine Cornea and Sclera
  7. The Canine Glaucomas
  8. Diseases and Surgery of the Canine Anterior Uvea
  9. Diseases and Surgery of the Canine Lens
  10. Diseases and Surgery of the Canine Posterior Segment
  11. Feline Ophthalmology
  12. Equine Ophthalmology
  13. Food and Fiber-Producing Animal Ophthalmology
  14. Laboratory and Exotic Animal Ophthalmology
  15. Comparative Neuro-Ophthalmology
  16. Ocular Manifestations of Systemic Disease

Each chapter is followed by a list of references. The list of contributors is in the form of a Table of Contents list (Chapters) with the authors' names at the end. I would have preferred to have seen a separate listing of contributors showing their degrees and affiliations.

The chapter on exam and diagnosis illustrates canine and equine exam techniques, and describes tests that could be applied across several species in general. There are many excellent color photos of various eye diseases and conditions. Many photos demonstrate the application of specific instruments in the treatment and diagnosis of eye disease. In some cases, drawings further illustrate detail.

Almost half of the book relates to canine topics, with the remainder divided into cats, equine, food animal, and exotics. The chapter on exotics discusses the rat, mouse, rabbit, Guinea pig, chinchilla, ferret, fish, amphibians, Reptiles, birds, mammals.

Wiley-Blackwell (2008).

The book is soft-cover, 640 pages, fully indexed, 18 Appendices on specific topics.

ISBN: 9780781785594.
