intermediate course will be open to veterinarians,
veterinary technicians/technologists, and veterinary staff actively interested in the
emergency care of blocked cats.

Course Information:
This course will cover why our feline patients develop urethral obstructions,
emergency room treatment options and how those options can affect immediate
and long term prognosis for our patients.
Week 1 (Real Time Session June 3, 2018):
Blocked Cats

Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to
- understand the potential reasons why cats develop urethral obstruction.
- understand the existing evidence for immediate treatment decisions of blocked cats in the ER.
- describe the risks and benefits of coccygeal blocks.
- discuss cost/benefit decision making with owners when making treatment decisions.
- discuss prognosis for immediate and long-term treatment accurately with owners.
Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required
to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

About the Presenter:
Dr. Beth Davidow is a 1995 graduate of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University.
She moved to Seattle, Washington after graduation and worked in a primary care small animal
and exotic clinic, volunteered at the Woodland Park Zoo, and then started working in an
emergency hospital. She realized she was an adrenaline junkie and started an ECC residency
at Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital in Portland, OR, passing boards in 2002.
She founded Animal Critical Care and Emergency Services (ACCES) in Seattle in 2003,
the ACCES Blood Bank in 2004, and a second hospital location, ACCES- Renton in 2010.
The hospitals merged with BluePearl in 2013. She served as BluePearl's inaugural Director
of Medical Quality in 2017. Dr. Davidow is the current VP of ACVECC and blogs at vetidealist.com.
She has been a consultant on VIN since 2002. Dr. Davidow is married, has 2 kids, a dog,
a rabbit and a bearded dragon. When not working, she enjoys gardening, hiking, swimming,
and traveling.
