Recalled: Darwin’s ZooLogics Dog Food

We have learned about another recall of Darwin’s pet food — the latest in a string of recalls in the past year and a half.

Darwin’s ZooLogics dog food

Maker: Darwin’s Natural Pet Products
Cause: Potential for salmonella
Announcement: Company email obtained by Petful (archived here)
What was recalled: ZooLogics Chicken and Vegetable Meals for Dogs (manufactured Nov. 2, 2017) and ZooLogics Duck and Vegetable Meals for Dogs (manufactured Nov. 16, 2017)

This is the latest in a string of recalls for Darwin’s since fall 2016, all arising from concerns about potential salmonella or listeria contamination.

In this most recent case, company founder Gary Tashjian explained in the company email that “most of this product has already been consumed, for the most part without incident.” He pinpointed the FDA’s “zero tolerance” for pathogens as the real culprit, “despite the fact that [pathogens] are at such low levels that dogs and cats typically can process them without any issue.”

Tashjian added: “Having said that, we take this situation very seriously. Our number one priority is providing your pet with meals that you can feel confident are healthy and safe.”

Darwin’s says it has already notified those customers who received any of the affected products in this recall.

As we noted late last year, the manufacturer of Darwin’s, Arrow Reliance Inc., has quietly issued a number of other recalls since October 2016, involving more than 23 tons of dog and cat food in total. Customers have complained of sick pets and “leaky, “off-color” packages in recent months.
